AbstractInnoSys proposes the advanced development of microwave power modules (MPMs) that combine monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) driver amplifiers with miniature traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifiers. This provides high power density at low cost and a small size and weight. When used as a driver amplifier in the MPM, the V/W band MMIC provides sufficient power and gain to drive the specially designed V/W-band TWT. InnoSys uses high voltage integrated circuits to achieve the high voltages needed for the TWT, and solid state vacuum device technology for the design and implementation of the microfabricated TWT power boosters. The overall gain of the combined MMIC/TWT is high, and that attribute is coupled with a reduction in the size and weight of the power supply. By combining the precise, lower cost manufacturing advantages of solid state with the high-frequency, high-power performance advantages of vacuum electronics, the result is a device/MPM that will enable V- and W-band electronics opportunities including important SATCOM applications. The V/W-band MPMs, including the integrated power supplies and conditioners, and the TWT power boosters, will be manufactured in-house by InnoSys and made available to the Department of Defense and prime contractors for defense and security applications including communication systems.
