Abstract
Threats from microorganisms in the air as a result of natural phenomena or human-induced activities such as terrorism cannot be adequately monitored and evaluated with current technology. Many of the sensor and detector devices that have been underdevelopment for counter-terrorism and chem/biowarfare defense cannot function effectively without an up-front aerosol collector and particle separator. InnovaTek's technology addresses this need with a novel approach that utilizes two componentsoperating in sequence to 1) separate large particles from the incoming airstream and 2) concentrate and retain small particles for identification. A large outer cyclone/centrifuge is used to separate particles > 50 micrometers and an inner bank of multiplewet-walled mini cyclones operating in parallel captures and concentrates small particles < 50 micrometers.Fieldable technologies that detect and identify toxic biological particles in the air provide the ability to warn and treat against exposure to harmful aerosolized particles such as biological warfare (BW) agents. InnovaTek's novel cycloneseparator/concentrator collects and concentrates biologically relevant particles from the air and removes large interfering particles so that effective and accurate identification of BW agents is possible. In addition to its military application theproposed device is expected to be in high demand from a wide variety of global scale markets, including civil defense markets and emerging commercial markets such as public health, food production, and pharmaceutical/ medical applications.
