Abstract

In this proposed effort, we propose to develop a low-SWaP Multi-ISA computing platform, LowMISC, to intelligently integrate Multi-ISA systems through high-speed PCIe interconnect. The key innovation of this proposal includes developments of: (1) a Low-SWaP Multi-ISA hardware platform which integrates multiple ISA (X86-64 and ARM64) systems through high-speed PCIe interconnect; The proposed System-on-Chip (SOC) board can be packaged in Enterprise and Datacenter Solid State Drive (SSD) Form Factor (EDSFF) to efficiently integrate into existing servers; (2) an optimized Multi-ISA Popcorn Linux operating system which is optimized with FPGA offloading techniques to reduce system overhead and with energy-aware scheduling techniques to reduce power consumption; and (3) a virtualized Multi-ISA Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) system that can dynamically instantiate Multi-ISA containers and migrate them across different ISA hardware. The Multi-ISA IaaS can efficiently utilize Multi-ISA hardware resources and provide secure and isolated Multi-ISA runtime system. Finally, all the proposed techniques will be integrated in a functional prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of LowMISC.
