The United States Navy is currently developing Condition Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+) concepts and technologies in order to improve the readiness and availability of Department of Defense assets by maximizing efficiency and reducing the life-cycle maintenance costs through data-driven decisions. A secure CBM+ sensor node has the potential to reduce the number of machine overhauls, shorten the time spent in depot for repairs, and optimize maintenance logistics. However, sophisticated cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure are becoming more common in the age of connected devices and there’s concern that attacks could target future CBM+ sensor systems. These attacks on system vulnerabilities could lead to mass-scale maintenance problems, loss of data on thousands of critical systems, and reduced fleet readiness. To address these problems, Luna proposed to develop the Intelligent and Secure Probing for Embedded Condition and Threat Monitoring (INSPECT-M) system that will provide the Navy with a secure CBM+ platform that contains state-of-the-art cyber defenses and cyber resilience protections. This system will consist of 1) embedded and easily customizable sensor nodes, 2) CBM+, cyber security, cyber resilience layers for secure data-driven decision making and real-time system monitoring, and 3) a centralized and intuitive user-interface that will display all key metrics and decisions for all monitored equipment in the network. The Phase I objectives for this effort include 1) determining a CBM+ system design that includes cyber security and cyber resilient concepts, 2) creating a prototype system that includes the added protections, 3) testing, validating, and demonstrating the prototype INSPECT-M system.
