Abstract

Hepburn and Sons LLC offers this proposal to evaluate the mitigation of exfoliation corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in 5XXX Aluminum using laser shock peening. The overall stated objective from the Navy for Phase II is as follows, “Based on the results of Phase I and the Phase II Statement of Work (SOW), treat sample coupons and conduct short-term testing of those coupons. Take measurements at each test point to determine if actual exfoliation or grain boundary formation occurs as predicted.” Phase II efforts will evaluate laser shock peening’s capability to mitigate exfoliation corrosion in 5XXX Aluminum in the lab and in an active shipboard environment.
