Abstract

The Innoveering team is proposing to address the US NAVY Crane (and entire hypersonics community) needs with a ceramic thin film sensor approach that we call the YSZ Environment Sensing (YES).  The YES sensor technology is based on very high temperature solid state sensing capability of YSZ in an oxygen environment of varying concentrations.  Based on the proposed sensing principles and sensor configuration which will be discussed in more detail below, the YES sensor will permit temperature sensing capability up to enthalpies corresponding to Mach 8 (2500°C) for applications such as boost glide vehicles.  In addition, pressure and species sensing can be obtained in a straight-forward fashion through well-developed designs and calibrations of these types of ionically conductive ceramic sensors through a combination of an Arrhenius relation as well as through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
