In fiscal years 2020-2022, the Department of Defense seeks to redesign/refurbish long range missiles for higher speed, longer range, greater accuracy, and better maneuverability, as well as increased payload for space access. Advanced materials with increased performance, as well as reduced cost and schedule compared to current state of the art eroding Cf/C systems (>50% reduction in cost and schedule), are needed for both rocket nozzles and leading edges. UES has developed a suite of ultra high temperature ceramic materials for use in such applications. Its TaC-based material is a leading contender for aluminized propellants, due to its high melting point (~3950°C), high erosion resistance, and chemical inertness. UES has successfully test fired TaC-based nozzles ranging from a subscale size (0.25” inner diameter) nozzle up to full size EM 76 nozzles (2.4” inner diameter). Even though UES has successfully test fired various size and types of nozzle throats, additional work is needed to study and modify the exit cone design and configuration. This Phase I program focuses on a path to increase the technology/manufacturing readiness level (TRL/MRL) up to 6 for UES’ rocket nozzle throats through successful redesign of a subscale (0.7-1.5” ID) and full scale (2-2.7” ID) nozzle. UES will work with government program managers (PMs) and other key original equipment manufacturers/stakeholders, ensuring the success of the proposed Weapon Pitch Day Phase I efforts.
