Fibertek proposes to develop a space qualifiable, small, optical modem board to support interoperable, encoding and decoding for free-space optical communications links. Space is a contested environment where traditional RF communications are susceptible to being jammed and intercepted. Optical communications offer a resilient solution, and its inclusion on SmallSats and in constellations is an Air Force priority that enables robust, high bandwidth capability with low probability of detect and low probability of intercept for assured mission operations during a conflict. A standards-based, platform-agnostic development approach, rather than a proprietary/fixed point, supports the Air Force desire for interoperability across the DoD. Fibertek, as part of the New Space commercial sector, provides Free Space Optics (FSO) communication products and technologies for market-driven services and products that surpass previous performance thresholds.
