Abstract
Gravity-induced loss of consciousness (GLOC) and almost loss of consciousness (ALOC) continue to be significant problems in high-speed flight, often causing loss of aircraft and aircrew personnel. Although technologies have been developed in an effort to prevent such GLOC related mishap, including g-suits and straining maneuvers by pilots, these measures have proven inadequate in eliminating all instances of GLOC. As aircraft maneuverability and speed continue to improve, the need for a more effective GLOC detection and prevention system is apparent. This proposal describes a sensor suite, to be integrated into a flight helmet, that monitors neuro-physiological responses in order to detect GLOC or ALOC in aircrew. The sensors included in the suite will include, but not be limited to, fNIR and EEG systems. This sensor system will be portable, non-invasive, and suitable for the flight environment
