Abstract
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUES HAVE BECOME AN IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SOLUTION OF SOME OF THE MOST DIFFICULT PROGRAMMING TASKS. THE DOMINANT TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPING SUCH APPLICATIONS IS TO WORK IN MULTI-MECHANISM, INTEGRATED KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM (KBS) DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT, SUCH AS KEE OR ART. UNFORTUNATELY, SYSTEMS DEVELOPED IN ENVIRONMENTS, SUCH AS THESE ARE INAPPROPRIATE FOR RUN-TIME USE IN MANY APPLICATIONS, PARTICULARLY APPLICATIONS GERMANE TO SPACE SYSTEMS--THEY ARE NOT REAL-TIME, CARRY THE BAGGAGE OF THE ENTIRE LISP ENVIRONMENT, AND ARE NOT WRITTEN IN ADA. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP MECHANISMS FOR COMPILING KBSS DEVELOPED IN KEE TO ADA. THIS WORK WILL REQUIRE INNOVATIVE WORK ON THE TECHNOLOGY OF COMPILING DYNAMIC, SYMBOLIC STRUCTURES TO CONVENTIONAL ENVIRONMENTS AND ON CREATING THE APPROPRIATE INTERFACES AND ENVIRONMENTS TO AID IN THE TRANSLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF LISP-DEFINED AND ADA-EXECUTEDSYSTEMS.
