SURFACE METAL OXIDE AND OXYHYDROXIDE LAYERS HAVE BEEN IMPLICATED AS TRITIUM TRAPS IN STAINLESS STEELS. A NEW TECHNIQUE IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR MEASURING HYDROGEN ISOTOPE DIFFUSION WITHIN THIS LAYER AND WITHIN PERMEATION BARRIERS MEANT TO LIMIT TRITIUM INVENTORY IN THESE MATERIALS.
