Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop a computer-based tool for helping individuals to learnabout nutrition and to monitor their own dietary intake. It will function through food service cashregisters and will have two primary outputs: (1) printed nutritional information specific to recipes andserving size, which will provide customers with immediate feedback on the content of their purchases;and (2) reports for tracking the food purchases of individuals over time to determine whether thisfeedback has any effect on buying/eating habits. Unlike existing supermarket-based programs, thissystem provides immediate "point of consumption" feedback to individual consumers. The potentialmarket for this product will include virtually any food service facility that wants to offer its customersinformation on diet and nutrition.
