This program effort will focus on the solid state joining of alpha and near alpha titanium alloys using friction and thermal stir welding processes. Material conditioning,solid state joining, and thermal profile studies in sections up to 1/2" will be conducted. Weld joint characterization and evaluation will be conducted to quantify weld capabilities to Tech PUB 278 requirements for joining of Ti alloys. Value stream analysis and process economic modeling will be conducted. A technology roadmap to develop the process to MTRL 7 as well as a commerciallization plan will be prepared.
