Research Institution
Innovative approaches are needed to put the airframe and gas turbine engine structures in play for spiral development as technological improvements offer reduced weights, lower costs, or shorter manufacturing cycle times. This proposed research and development effort will demonstrate the feasibility of producing low cost, flexible tooling for the fabrication of composite components. Precision Deposition and Finishing (PDF) methods are proposed to enable affordable and rapid methods to build and modify tooling produced from materials such as INVAR, to meet the demand for small lot productioin as well as spiral development for military aircraft and engines.
