AbstractKlein Associates proposes using a decision-centered design approach to develop an advanced interface configuration for a realistic single- and multi-platform mission rehearsal system. Our approach is contrasted with the more traditional approaches of data- and system-centered design. With decision-centered design the critical and difficult judgments and decisions required for mission success for three platforms will be identified. These will be used as the basis for determining the critical concepts and design features necessary for implementation of the interface. These decision requirements will be elicited through cognitive task analysis (CTA). The results of the CTA, in conjunction with the mission rehearsal requirements by platform, will be used to outline an intelligent architecture for the system interface design. "Intelligent" is used to mean a system that provides crews of different platforms with the information they need, when they need it, in a format that supports their use of it, while making effective and efficient-use of the available cpu cycles and bandwidths. The deliverables for the Phase I work will be detailed in a final report describing the requirements for mission success (by platform), decision requirements tables, and design recommendations.
