Abstract
KNOWLEDGE ACCESS, INC. DEVELOPS STAND-ALONE, MICROCOMPUTER RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS (RETRIEVAL SOFTWARE PACKAGED WITH DATA- BASES) AND PROPOSES TO EXTEND THE SYSTEM TO DEVELOP LOW-COSTACCESS TO NCI'S PHYSICIAN'S DATA QUERY (PDQ) INFORMATION SYSTEM. THIS PHASE I PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON ESTABLISHING THETECHNICAL/HUMAN/FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY OF PRODUCING A USEFUL SYSTEM FOR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS AND ONCOLOGISTS. ACCESS TO INFORMATION OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES HAS BEEN ENHANCED BY ONLINE SYSTEMS; PDQ IS ONE OF THE MOST RECENT EXAMPLES. HOWEVER, MOST PROFESSIONALS DO NOT USE THESE SYSTEMS, IN SPITE OF THEIR INCREASING NEED FOR INFORMATION. THE PROPOSED SYSTEM BUILDS ON THE INFORMATION BASE ALREADY CREATED FOR CANCER TREATMENT INFORMATION AND PROPOSES TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE, WITH ENHANCED POSTRETRIEVAL PROCESSING FEATURES, ON A MICROCOMPUTER. THE SYSTEM MEETS MANY USER CONCERNS ABOUT COST (NO MINUTE-TO-MINUTE CHARGES), AVAILABILITY (24 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK), AND TRAINING (LESS THAN 20 MINUTES) AND CAN BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL CANCER INFORMATION. PHASE I WILL RESULT IN: 1. A REVIEW OF THE PDQ DATABASE ATTRIBUTES AND USE (INCLUDING INCORPORATION OF FINDINGS FROM THE ONGOING PDQ EVALUATION); 2. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE RETRIEVAL SYSTEM WITH A SUBSET OF THE PDQ FILE; 3. FORMATIVE RESEARCH ON THE PROTOTYPE RETRIEVAL SYSTEM; AND 4. THE DEVELOPMENT OFRECOMMENDATIONS FOR FULL-FILE IMPLEMENTATION AND A PLAN FOR RESEARCH ON CANCER PREVENTION AND SCREENING EXTENSIONS OF OF THE DATABASE IN PHASE II.
