Abstract
We propose a Universal, Integrated blood Donor Profile Database (DPD) to capture and maintain information about blood donor identity, deferrals, health and travel history, and responses to blood donor eligibility questionnaires across multiple donor visits, different geographic locations and blood establishments. DPD will enable establishments to maintain global connectivity, consistency and integrity of information, and efficient utilization of donor history for global screening and deferrals. DPD promotes safety and improve efficiency by ensuring consistency of donor history and profile across multiple visits and across diverse geographic locations. DPD enables facilities to both identify donors deferred permanently, and allow quicker processing of donors with no history of deferrals or whose temporary deferral criteria are satisfied. Phase I will research the required data structures and constraints, model those structures, and demonstrate a donor profile database consistent with that model. Phase I will research and demonstrate interfaces to DPD adaptable to the application and security requirements of different clinical environments. Phase II will extend and validate the research in multiple clinical settings to ensure that the results are scaleable, robust, secure, produce accurate and consistent information, and provide a user friendly interface for the key user roles in different facilities with different requirements.
