Abstract

In Phase I, Kutta Consulting defined and detailed its vision for a Personal Flight Data Recorder Device with Display (PFDR-D) that gives pilots the ability to record and view aircraft data in the palm of their hand. Kutta, however, did not act alone. The Air Force Flight Test School, Navy Flight Test School, the Army’s Aviation Applied Technology Directorate, Boeing, and UAV auto-pilot manufacturers contributed significant concepts, and subject matter expertise, that shaped Kutta’s Phase I results – including one patent pending idea. During Phase II, Kutta builds the PFDR-D, integrates user-friendly decision aids, and demonstrates the PFDR-D in general aviation and military aircraft. Throughout the Phase II effort, Kutta uses its proven FAA software development process to create and refine the PFDR-D functionality. Advanced features such as a modular user-configurable displays, voice commands, voice prompts, and innovative methods for obtaining aircraft engine data, pilot inputs, and aircraft surface positions are provided in Kutta’s Phase II Work Plan. The PFDR-D also adapts to a specific aircraft’s “personality” via individual personality modules and dynamically calibrates itself. The strength of Kutta’s Phase I results, Phase II methodology, and partners’ expertise ensures Kutta will produce a viable product at the end of Phase II.
