Abstract
LASER RANGEFINDERS, DESIGNATORS, AND RADARS OPERATING IN THE EYE-SAFE SPECTRAL REGION ARE REQUIRED FOR VARIOUS ARMY MISSIONS. THE REGION AROUND 1.5 MICRONS IS PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE. THE FAVORED CURRENT APPROACH TO PRODUCING EYE-SAFE LASERS IS TO RAMAN SHIFT THE OUTPUT OF ND:CLASS, ND:YAG, OR ND:YLF LASERS. WE PROPOSE TO SHOW THE FEASIBILITY OF DEMONSTRATING AN EFFICIENT, ALL SOLIDSTATE, DIODE-PUMPED ER:GLASS LASER OPERATING AT 1.54 MICRONS.
