AbstractThe purpose of this proposal is to present a novel and promising solution for a Hearing Protection Evaluation System (HPES) that accurately emulates the torso and human head and its interaction with directional and omni-directional auditory fields created by continuous and impulsive acoustic noise for levels up to 185 dB. The HPES will also accurately emulate the attenuation effects of earmuff and earplug Hearing protection devices (HPDs) in both continuous and impulsive noise environments across the full dynamic range of human hearing from the outer to middle ear. In addition the HPES will simulate occlusion and bone conduction effects as well as all significant parameters of the outer ear acoustics. Our HPES will also preserve inter-aural level differences, bilateral acoustic reflex, tissue conductions, ear canal morphology, and will accurately calculate attenuation data of for both ear muffs and ear plug types of HPDs. In addition the system will have replicable pinnas and be easily maintained.
