Abstract

Documentation is necessary for healthcare providers to effectively communicate a patient’s status and previously performed interventions to the next provider, and improper documentation can lead to a multitude of problems from poor patient care to revenue loss. Today, field medics rely mostly on handheld manual entry devices and voice transcription tools. However, these solutions can be time-consuming, prone to mistakes, or even be logistically unsuited for use in the field. Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) team proposes to develop a robust, autonomous patient encounter documentation tool that does not rely on speech to text technology or manual data entry, instead uses a combination of egocentric computer vision using helmet- or body-worn cameras and inertial measurement units (IMUs) to perform autonomous medical treatment documentation that is capable of providing input to data-driven decision support systems aimed at providing diagnosis and treatment recommendations to combat medics during prolonged field care. Such a system would improve casualty care and would be readily useful to civilian EMS personnel.
