Abstract
WE PROPOSE RESEARCH TO SHOW THE FEASIBILITY OF COHERENT OPTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR MEASUREMENT OF VERY HIGH PRESSURE. IN ADDITION, THE OPTICAL PROBE WILL BE IMMUNE TO ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE, SO IT MAY BE USEFUL IN A WIDE RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTS AND HAVE COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS. THE SENSOR HEAD WILL BE A COMPAST FABRY-PEROT ETALON. PRESSURE CHANGES INDUCE REFRACTIVE INDEX CHANGES IN THE ETALON, CHANGING ITS OPTICAL REFLECTION OR TRANSMISSION WHICH IS MEASURED BY PHOTO-SENSORS. A FREQUENCY STABILIZED DIODE-LASER PUMPED MONOLITHIC RING LASER, RECENTLY DEVELOPED A LIGHTWAVE ELECTRONICS CORPORATION FOLLOWING RESEARCH AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY, IS UNIQUELY SUITED TO THIS APPLICATION.
