Abstract
We propose to develop a very low cost Photomultiplier Chip (TM) as a direct replacement for photomultiplier tubes, to help make gamma spectrometers disposably cheap. The detector achieves single-photon sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low gain noise and low dark noise using novel designs in a gallium arsenide-based compound semiconductor. The approach will mitigate risks of scaling to the inch-size needed for a spectrometer system.
