Abstract

Air Force pilots can experience rapid changes in the pressure across the tympanic membrane due to rapid descent or ejection during emergency situations. If this pressure differential is not relieved, the pilot can experience distraction due to substantial discomfort. In extreme cases, the eardrum ruptures, resulting in pain and disorientation. In addition to barotrauma prevention, there is a growing need to spatialize auditory queues within the cockpit. This improves the ability to parse information and enables a more rapid response from pilots. Triton Systems proposes a solution, that will protect against barotrauma and high noise levels, while providing a controlled acoustic volume that can facilitate spatial rendering.
