Abstract

Arresting gear system integrity aboard aircraft carriers is essential for aircraft recover aircraft safety and efficiency. The cross-deck pendant (CDP) cable is prone to substantial wear and tear, as it is subjected to high tensile forces from the aircraft tailhook as well as abrasion from dragging across the deck. Current CDP inspection procedures are highly subjective and rely on the trained expertise of the maintainer to correctly ascertain the health of the cable. In addition, the operating environment of aircraft carrier flight decks presents numerous challenges and ruggedization requirements that preclude the use of existing automated cable inspection technologies.  The Navy desires a simple, compact inspection device for use by Navy maintenance technicians to increase the CDP inspection accuracy/reliability and provide a “GO/NO-GO” indicator. Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) proposes to develop CDP-Scan, a compact, user-friendly, automated inspection system for reliable cable assessment. CDP-Scan will be developed as a derivative of Auto-Scan, a handheld ruggedized inspection tool previously developed by IAI for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) (F-35) Program that is certified for Navy flight deck operation.
