Abstract

This Mohawk Innovative Technology, Inc. Phase II proposal addresses the DOD need for a 40 to 50 SHP propulsion and/or power systems technology to power Class II UAVs through development of a low cost modular 50 SHP GTE-powered alternator system based on MITI’s proprietary oil-free Sixth Generation compliant foil bearings. MITI recently completed the preliminary design of said system during Phase I of this effort. The presented preliminary design features a high frequency permanent magnet (PM) starter/ alternator section, along with advanced coupling technology which isolates it from the hot turbine engine core for improved thermal management. It also features highly optimized aerodynamic elements (fan, compressor, turbine and combustor) for high efficiency. Weighing just under 50 lb., it achieves a specific power of 1 HP/lb. During the Phase II effort, MITI will conduct detailed design, fabricate, and test engine under relevant application conditions, with the goal of achieving TRL 5.
