Synthesis of Polymeric Cyclodextrin Nitrate (Poly CDN), a New Class of Energetic Materials
Phone: (610) 279-2340
This project will produce a commercial process for manufacturing a new class of cyclodextrin polymers. After nitration these polymers have the explosives potential to produce high performance with minimal adverse environmental impact. The polymers can form inclusion complexes with various oxidizers and energetics, thus reducing their sensitivity to detonation due to shock, fire or fragment impact. Cyclodextrin is a commercially available but relatively new chemical produced by the enzymatic digestion of starch. When polymerized into a nanotube, it offers a unique dual use technology opportunity. It can be nitrated to form a safer and more processable energetic than nitrocellulose for use in advanced propulsion and power systems. In commercial applications the nanotube polymers may be used to encapsulate a variety of materials for use in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and chemical processing industries. The anticipated advantages in munitions applications include:-1.3 Explosive classification vs. 1.1 for nitrocellulose-Higher energy, less sensitive explosives-Lower life cycle cost-Shock survivable explosives-Ease of demilitarization-Processable by casting or twin screw extrusion-Desensitizing inclusion complex formation with energetic plasticizers-May eliminate need for inert binders-Fewer ingredients required-Low feedstock cost
