Abstract

While large-format infrared detector arrays have advanced rapidly in recent years, infrared scene projector arrays, a key component for testing these imaging systems, have struggled to keep pace. To achieve realistic imagery, infrared scene projectors (IRSP) must be capable of displaying scenes with fast refresh rates, high resolution, and accurate radiant intensity output to accurately test IR sensors and seekers. At CFD Research, we will leverage our experience in colloidal synthesis and patterning, as well as thermal and optical modeling, to develop a novel, quantum dot (QD) based, infrared-emitting screen to improve the efficiency and response time of emitter arrays. The quantum dot screen will act as a color converting layer that can be excited by a visible or near-infrared light source and emit in the infrared. The fluorescent screen will be modular and compatible with a number of different light excitation and modulation methods. In Phase I, materials, efficiency, manufacturability, stability, and ruggedness on a flight motion table will be investigated. In Phase II the QD screen will be integrated with an excitation system for further testing and demonstration.
