Abstract72703-There is a national interest in the efficient, economical and enhanced utilization of biomass as an energy resource. Consequently, there is a need for the development of a feedstock-flexible, modular, biomass drying system that can cater to the local market drivers in an efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner. This project will develop a pulsed combustion drying system for biomass. The technical and engineering feasibility was established in Phase I through successful experimental and analytical studies. The innovative pulse combustion drying system was shown to be potentially superior to conventional drying systems in efficiency, environmental performance, and cost. Phase II will develop and field test a prototype biomass drying system, generate process characterization data for scale-up and commercialization, and prepare for launching the technology in a Phase III demonstration. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: Deployment of the novel, cost-effective, environmentally benign, and efficient biomass drying system should enhance biomass utilization, promote energy savings, and reduce pollutant emissions.
