Abstract

Current dynamic seals in solid rocket motors are limited to relatively low-temperature environments, which limit the compactness and overall temperature capabilities of the motors. We propose to develop a novel seal technology that will enable significant increases in temperature at the seal location, reduce friction and actuation loads, and offer infinite shelf life. In Phase I we will prove the feasibility of our approach through analyses, prototyping, and proof‑of‑concept demonstrations. In Phase II, we will design and assemble prototype seal assemblies and measure their performance under conditions that simulate operation in a solid rocket motor environment.
