Abstract

The P-8A Poseidon, the U.S. Navy’s multi-mission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, supports a myriad of mission types as the Navy’s primary antisubmarine warfare (ASW) platform. Current demands on time, manpower, and training device availability limit opportunities for P-8 aircrew to practice ASW tactics and advance their skills. SoarTech, in collaboration with Aviation Systems Engineering Company (ASEC), will design and implement a prototype Interactive Maritime Patrol Antisubmarine Crewmember Trainer (IMPACT), a lightweight software solution to provide portable and readily available training of tactics for ASW; surface warfare (SUW); and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR). IMPACT will enable P-8 ASW crew to practice maritime patrol tactics in an interactive, constructive simulation environment and receive performance assessment feedback after each exercise to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities and support qualification achievement. Phase I of IMPACT completed initial concept development. Under Phase II, SoarTech will develop and deliver a Technology Readiness Level 5 training application focusing on: 1) parameter-based scenario configuration, 2) user-facing gameplay element design, 3) trainee proficiency computation, and 4) Fleet acceptance and integration. Phase II will augment and refine Phase I’s scenario configuration, gameplay and trainee proficiency elements into the end-to-end, TRL 5 training software prototype.
