Understanding the health and status of remote small vessels is hampered by the lack of timely performance data. Without data, fleet managers and maintenance engineers cannot compile an accurate assessment of the status of individual vessels, the aggregate fleet, and relevant environmental conditions. This reduced situational awareness impacts vessel and fleet performance and increases the likelihood of damage to or even loss of a vessel. Maintenance is performed reactively after failure, and subtle insights gleaned by comparing longitudinal data across sister vessels never come to light. Furthermore, citizen scientist and other third-party users miss a valuable source of real-world marine data, which hampers scientific progress and bypasses an opportunity for crowd-sourced analytics. To provide timely sensor data from fleets of small vessels for fleet managers, maintenance engineers, and citizen scientists, we plan to design and demonstrate ShipShape, a complete small vessel health data management solution that consists of a ruggedized shipboard hardware monitor with onboard analytics and a high performance cloud database with advanced analytics. Together, these components enable remote users to rapidly analyze aggregate data from a small vessel fleet as soon as it becomes available.
