Abstract

Carbon fiber - hafnium carbide matrix composites are investigated for numerous propulsion applications. High manufacturing cost precluding wider application of this technology. This proposal builds upon novel, low cost C-C composite and CVR conversion technology developed at MER. One step, low cost C-C composite cylinders will be fabricated on one step and subsequently only the matrix will be converted to HfC. Resulting properties will be evaluated and compound with the state-of-the-art C-HfC. Resulting properties will be evaluated and compound with the state-of-the-art C-HfC composite.
