Abstract
Regenerative fuel cells have the potential for significantly higher specific energy and cycle life than the most advanced batteries. Other advantages include the ability to provide very large short-term peak currents without damaging the system and exceptional environmental friendliness. While the technology has a great potential for replacing rechargeable batteries for some applications, problems with hydrogen storage, operational overhead, complexity, and cost have prevented the commercial use of these devices. MER Corporation proposes to develop a very compact regenerative fuel cell system that has no moving parts, very high specific energy, and can be produced at low cost. During Phase I, a small device will be demonstrated to prove the concept.
