Abstract
A NEW METHOD OF USING AN APPLIED ELECTRICAL POTENTIAL TO CAUSE CHEMICAL SEPARATIONS IS DESCRIBED. THE PROCESS IS BASED ON THE USE OF FERROELECTRIC ADSORBENTS AND IS BOTH CONCEPTUALLY SIMPLY AND UNPRECEDENTED. BECAUSE THE METHOD AVOIDS LARGE SWINGS IN TEMPERATURE OR PRESSURE, IN PRINCIPLE IT OFFERS SUBSTANTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS. THIS TECHNOLOGY PROMISES TO BE GENERAL AND WILL BE TESTED ON GAS SEPARATIONS IN PHASE I. SEPARATION OF O2 FROM AIR AND REMOVAL OF CO2 FROM GAS STREAMS ARE PROCESSES THAT CURRENTLY REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT ENERGY EXPENDITURE, ARE OF GREAT COMMERCIAL IMPORTANCE, AND ARE EXPECTED TO BE AMENABLE TO THIS NEW METHOD. THESE TWO SEPARATIONS WILL BE USED TO DEMONSTRATE FEASIBILITY.
