Abstract
Trade-off electrochemical studies were conducted in Phase I on four cell systems and promising results were obtained on lithium primary active cell system utilizing solid cathode and organic-based electrolyte solution. Specifically, V2O5-based cathodesystems, particularly crystalline V2O5 and amorphous V2O5.10P2O5, offered very attractive performance features: excellent state-of-charge voltage characteristics, high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities, and ultra low temperature capability.Excellent operational capability at -54oC was demonstrated with a Li/crystalline V2O5 couple using a 1 M LiPF6/methyl acetate(MA) electrolyte solution.
