Abstract
50172-98-I Advanced Low-Melting Non-Segregating Electrolyte Compositions for MCFC--M-C Power Corporation, 8040 South Madison Street, Burr Ridge, IL 60521-5808; (630) 986-8040 Ms. Diane S. Erickson, Principal Investigator Mr. Patrick F. McSweeney, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82611 Amount: $74,989 State of the art molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) electrolytes tend to segregate during long-term operation. This segregation, if allowed to continue, results in reduced performance and short fuel cell life. State-of-the-art MCFC electrolytes will be stabilized against migration by doping, and the resultant material will be demonstrated in operating fuel cells. The technical and economic feasibility of low-melting, non-segrating electrolytes for molten carbonate fuel cells will be established. The performance and stability will be demonstrated in bench-scale cell tests, and the economic benefit will be established by comparison with existing electrolytes. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: MCFC have the potential to provide low cost, environmentally benign, high quality power. This project is an important part of the MCFC development and commercialization effort._
