Abstract
The feasibility of a Multi-mode Wall Penetrating munition delivered by an M203 grenade launcher has been demonstrated. An initial "shot" non-lethally performs the wall penetrating function. A second shot delivers the multi-mode lethal or non-lethal generic submunition. Both shots are contained in a single munition. Multi-mode capability is a key advantage against competing concepts. Multi-mode means that (1) lethal or non-lethal submunitions are delivered through an 8 inch concrete wall non-lethally; and (2) a variety of non-lethal modes such as diversionary, calmative, marking, irritant, or a combination can be used in the submunition. The "Doubleshot" munition can be designed to provide enough volume for the submunition yet still fit within the launcher size constraints. Ensuring adequate clearance and shielding to minimize back blast against the operator was considered. Shaped charged modeling work using the computer program hydrocode CTH indicates that the likelihood of meeting wall penetrating requirements is excellent under a Phase II project. A second concept based on using a specialized detonation/propulsion unit is a viable option. However, the "B40" M203 based munition is considered the best near-term product. Phase II includes munition system design and a series of prototype tests to demonstrate wall penetrating and submunition delivery capability.
