Abstract
35% of US Children, particularly poor children, enter kindergarten unprepared to learn, and 38% of 4th graders cannont reat a grade level. New research highlights reliable pre-literacy interventions for at-risk preschoolers. But adults most of in need of this training ar least liklely to know it exists. R&D will: (a) distll evidence-based interventions for strngthening emergent literacy skills of preschoolers form low SES families into a hilghly motivational video/electronic media training program for their parents/caregivers; (b) test and refine the product using gold standard evaluation protocols (random assignment, before/after testing, control groups): (c) thoroughtly investigate appropriate information technoloies for promoting and disseminating the product to target parents/caregivers; (d) design the product to mesh with and enhance new Federal emergent literacy initiatives. R&D will exploit malleable digital technologies (digital video, QuickTime, DTP, HTML, PDF) to produce an empirically-tested easily replicated product, readily adaptedfor delivery through any dissemination medium- video cassettes and printed manuals,DVDs, Internet streaming video PDF eletronic books, TV bradcasts.
