Abstract
THE AIM OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP A SURGICAL LASER SYSTEM WHICH CAN REMOVE TUMORS OR OTHER TISSUE WITH MINIMAL BLOOD LOSS, PRECISION, AND MINIMAL DAMAGE TO ADJACENT TISSUE. THE PHASE I PROGRAM IS A DEMONSTRATION OF LASER CONTROL PARAMETERS REQUIRED FOR HEMOSTATIC ACTION WITHOUT TISSUE DAMAGE. PHASE II INCLUDES DEMONSTRATION OF LASER SCALPEL ACTION, OPERATOR INTERFACE DESIGN, AND SYSTEM INTEGRATION, PROVIDING A PROTOTYPE SURGICAL LASER SYSTEM. PRESENTLY AVAILABLE SURGICAL LASER SYSTEMS EITHER PRODUCE CHAR AND HEMOSTASIS OR NO CHAR AND NO HEMOSTASIS. THE SURGICAL LASER SYSTEM PROPOSED HEREIN PROVIDES HEMOSTASIS WHILE MAKING CLEAN SHARP
