Abstract
VLSI (VERY LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION) TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO THE POINT WHERE HIGH SPEED FLOATING POINT PROCESSORS MAY BE CONCATENATED TO FORM COMPACT SUPERCOMPUTERS WITH FAR GREATER THROUGHPUT THAN UNIPROCESSOR MACHINES. MTI PROPOSES TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP A MULTIPROCESSOR COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE FOR REAL-TIME DIGITAL FILTERING OF UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC DATA FROM MULTIPLE SENSORS. THE ARCHITECTURE WILL BE OPTIMIZED FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR NEW DECENTRALIZED SQUARE ROOT INFORMATION FILTER (DSRIF). PHASE I RESEARCH WILL DEMONSTRATE FEASIBILITY OF THE DSRIF AS A MEANS FOR SOLVING THE LINEAR LEAST SQUARES ESTIMATION PROBLEM IN DECENTRALIZED FORM. PHASE II RESEARCH WILL FOCUS UPON DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A PROTOTYPE DEVICE.
