Abstract
This project seeks to develop a unique instrument for non-destructive inspection (NDI) and defect detection in aerospace composite structures. The instrument architecture is based on integration of a new 2D Matrix Laser Vibrometer (MLV) with an automated data processing and software suite. The principle of the method and technical feasibility of the proposed instrument has already been established, with solutions to the major technical hurdles having been demonstrated. This project lays out a path to practical implementation of a field deployable instrument, based upon integration of customized hardware components and dedicated data processing and handling software. The core technology comprises a Matrix Laser Vibrometer (MLV) which enables high-speed capture of spatial vibration patterns including random or transient processes. This feature of the MLV is unparalleled by existing optical methods, significantly exceeding their operational capabilities in terms of speed, resolution and sensitivity. The program effort will also focus on implementation of a comprehensive method which estimates the probability of defect detection (POD), which will assist efforts to identify and optimize the key system design parameters.
