Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop high-energy perovskites as an oxidizer replacement for ammonium perchlorate (AP). The proposed perovskite materials provide energetic properties on par with or better than ammonium perchlorate, creating propellants with increased specific impulse (Isp) while significantly decreasing ingredient production costs. In Phase I, PSI will synthesize high-energy oxidizers, characterize these materials, perform safety/compatibility testing, and formulate a baseline hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)/ aluminum (Al)/Oxidizer propellant. In Phase II, Insensitive Munitions testing will be conducted including bullet impact and slow-cookoff. Additionally, scale-up efforts will be conducted on the high-energy oxidizer synthesis increasing output above Phase I levels (2 grams/batch). Small-scale testing using PSI’s 2x4 solid rocket motor will be done using a baseline high-energy oxidizer formulation and compared to an AP formulation. We will look to advance the high-energy oxidizer materials beyond Phase II by scaling the materials for use in large/medium-scale rocket motors. Approved for Public Release | 22-MDA-11215 (27 Jul 22)
