Abstract

Piasecki Aircraft Corporation, with the Ohio State University and Applied Impulse Incorporated propose designing a Morphing Duct for tilting ducted rotor High-Speed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (HSVTOL) vehicles. The Morphing Duct will use Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire actuators attached to the duct structure using Vaporizing Foil Actuator Welding (VFAW) technology. Morphing Ducts will enable HSVTOL vehicles to achieve higher speeds than current technology without sacrificing hover performance. Morphing Ducts work by varying the duct profile to have a hover geometry and a high-speed geometry. SMA wire actuators and VFAW technology enable Morphing Ducts by providing a simple, light-weight actuation system ideally suited to the Morphing Duct application.
