Abstract
Silicate-ester-based fluids have found extensive use as dielectric coolants in military applications, such as aircraft radar. However, the ease of hydrolysis of these fluids results in the formation of an alcohol and, in the more advanced stages, a gelatinous precipitate that caused component malfunctions. While a PAO coolant meets current requirements, advanced systems require improved performance in heat flux removal rate, heat capacity, thermal and hydrolytic stability, and low wear in pumps while still allowing the systems to operate without major modifications. To meet these requirements, METSS will focus on combining hydrolytically stable synthetic basestocks and additives to produce a new class of dielectric fluids with superior performance properties; including low temperature viscosity which could impact system operation when subjected to the currently specified - 65°F cold-start environment. The proposed program will also address additional issues related to material compatibility issues, personnel safety, environmental impact and use costs. This approach will utilize existing commercial technology, solicit commercial support and provide an effective plan to supply the product to the AF if fully successful.
