Abstract

Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) proposes a new ignition and flame stabilization system for a potentially transformational advance in next generation of high-speed airbreathing propulsion systems. It is based on our recently developed technology that augments ignition, stabilizes flames, and increases reactivity leading to more complete combustion and higher flame speeds. The enabling catalytic component is extremely compact and lightweight, utilizes onboard fuels, and supports repeated ignition and combustion augmentation by operating on-demand in millisecond timeframes. The technology is readily scalable and ultra-compact allowing it to fit in tight locations and minimize physical protrusions, and has simple fuel/air control for operation with onboard resources. Parasitic requirements are negligible. The approach has been successfully examined in ground-based Brayton cycle engines. During Phase I we will (i) analytically confirm the suitability of the, including flow rates required for ignition and combustion enhancement in scramjet engines, with sub-scale data, (ii) experimentally confirm the size and weight of the component required to produce the required performance from Jet-fuels of interest, and (iii) identify needs for combustion testing during Phase II and engine integration options. PCI has assembled a team of in-house specialists, engine manufacturer, and subject matter experts.
