Abstract

Scramjet engine ignition systems are challenging due to the typically short time available for ignition and unfavorable flow conditions. Many existing approaches use consumable accelerant ignition aids which add size, complexity, safety, and/or logistical challenges. Spark igniters are typically limited in pulse energy and do not deposit energy in an ideal location. Under the proposed program, Creare will develop a pulsed ignition system for scramjet engines that uses only onboard resources and no unique consumables. Our system will deliver high pulse energy to an ideal region in the engine to allow rapid and reliable flame ignition and propagation. In the Phase I program, we will design and test an initial prototype system in a quiescent chamber. In the Phase II program, we will refine the design and demonstrate superior ignition performance in a scramjet engine.
