Abstract
PHASE I WILL USE A NOVEL GRAFTING TECHNIQUE TO MODIFY MEMBRANE MATERIALS SO AS TO ENHANCE THEIR PERMEATION GRAFTING APPROACH BY CONDUCTING STUDIES ON BOTH DENSE FILMS AND POROUS POLYMER MEMBRANES. FEASIBILITY WILL BE DEMONSTRATED BY GRAFTING CHARGED MONOMERS ONTO SEVERAL MATERIALS INCLUDING POLYSULFONE, CELLULOSE ACETATE, AND POLYAMIDE. SUCCESSFUL MEMBRANES WILL EXHIBIT ENHANCED REJECTION OF MULTIVALENT IONS AT HIGH FLUX AND LOW OPERATINGPRESSURE.
