Abstract
An innovative multifunctional and adaptive structure is proposed where a multi-functional sensor grid is embedded in a composite structure. The sensor grid only requires access to the external nodes of the grid. This simplifies cabling and increasesstrength of the multi-functional composite to allow the structure to carry loads. The sensor grid can be a combination of resistive, capacitive and inductive sensing elements to measure strain (shape), pressure and/or temperature. Active elements, suchas conformable piezo-wafers can also be embedded in the structure to allow for active shape changing, vibration reduction and health monitoring. The proposed structures can be used as load bearing structures and as apertures in aerospace structures. In Phase I, Mid¿ will design and fabricate small prototypes to experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the innovation. Phase II will be a large-scale demonstration of the innovation. Benefits of the TechnologyThe proposed innovation will reduce weight, increase performance (number of functions performed divided by weight) while keeping cabling and integration simple.Commercial and DoD ApplicationsThe technology has wide application in the spacecraft, aircraft and automotive industries.
