Abstract
Mid¿, along with ballistics and firearms expert Ed Hartwell, proposes development of the ¿Piezer¿ (pee-ay¿-zer) ¿ an untethered electro-muscular disruption non-lethal stun weapon based on piezoelectric technology for civil law enforcement officers and the military. The innovative new device would provide individual threat control at increased range (40 50 meters) over existing weapons and compatibility with 12 gauge shotguns. Piezoelectrics enable efficient high voltage generation in a small package, and can be designed to deliver high-energy stun pulses. The Piezer device combines the proven effectiveness, legal and social acceptability of the Taser¿ with the ease of use, practicality, and extended range of shotgun shells. Utility of the Piezer is probably best realized in crowd control situations or riots having high levels of aggression. These situations meet the requirement that an additional lethal weapon must be trained on an individual or group before a non-lethal weapon can be used. This rule is common to domestic law enforcement groups.
